That may be a bad pun, but it’s no joke.
Filling up your gas tank in the morning can save you some gas money.
Here’s why . . .
Temperatures in the morning are almost always the coolest of the day and the ground temperature is also at its coolest point.
Cool air and a cool ground makes for cool gas which means the gas is denser in the morning than at any other time of the day. This is important because gas stations in the U.S. measure the gas going into your car by volume. And the denser the gas, the more gas you get per volume.
So by filling up in the morning you’ll save a little money/get a slight increase in your mpg.
Another benefit of filling up in the morning is that it’s good for the environment. Gas evaporates faster in the heat of the day so you’ll have more gasoline emissions esacaping from your tank if you fill up during the day as opposed to early in the morning or later in the evening.
So next time you notice you’re starting to run low, plan to get up a few minutes early for work the next day and stop for gas along the way. Your wallet and the environment will thank you.
